In his book 'the old ways' Macfarlane writes about the relationship between paths, walking and the imagination. He describes the subtle ways in which we are shaped by the landscapes through which we move. About the ways a journey can end up allowing us to discover who we are.
A recurring persona in his book is the author E. Thomas. To him paths connected real places but they also led outwards to metaphysics, backwards to history and inwards to the self. He imagined himself in topographical terms. For paths run through people as surely as they run through places. And in the last chapters of his book Macfarlane is retelling the life of Thomas not as a biography, but as his biogeography.
Due to the hard surfaces of paths, our footsteps do not make such an impression on the landscape as before. And a majority of our wandering isn't even physical anymore. We step from Instagram to Youtube, from hyperlink, through ads, towards a new dm or like.
How do we imprint our dreams on the paths we walk in this world full of asphalted or digital paths?
Trajector is walking.
And while doing so, it is recording the environment in which it moves around. And after walking together with me we share the imagery we collected. From this a videographic document of our stories is made. These combined documents become a biogeography of Trajector. After each walk Trajector is shaped a bit more by the landscape through which it moves. And with the collection of memories we give an new meaning to the paths we walked.
